Build your own Wind Turbine

To build your own Wind Turbine, we need to understand first the three major components of the modern wind turbines, this are:

Rotor, which includes considerations of Blade shape, Blade materials, Number of blades and Length of blades.

Generator and Controls, which provides two functionalities of Controlling the blade speed and direction. Control of the rotational speed as a function of wind velocity is based on the Tip Speed Ratio (TSR). Optimizing the TSR can maximize the power generation efficiency.

Structural support, which is basically the tower used to support the infrastructure.

The installations of wind turbines are generally considered as On-Shore, Off-Shore and Near Shore. The most cost effective On-Shore option turbines are installed more than 10 km inland. Off-shore turbines are located more than 3 km into the water. The installation may be more costly even though the output could be predictable. Near-shore turbines are located less than 3 km into the water or less than 10 km inland. This type of an installation trades some of the predictability achievable from off-shore installations in favor of the accessibility benefits of near-shore installations of wind turbines.
